Saddles and Chateaux

Cycling the Loire by bike (Trek Verve 3) has been on the agenda for a few years. So this year we’ve made a start, 200 km of what is a 900km trail from the Massif Central to the Atlantic – but we also made a few detours…

To say that the castles in the Loire valley are part of the landscape would be an understatement – whether  illustrious French chateaux (with large scale art installations) to less well-known manor houses, their silhouettes dominate and we were spoilt for choice.  Time to sketch some of the glorious towers and turrets would have been welcome but the pedals had to keep turning!

These heritage sites are the legacy of French kings, many from medieval times and the region has World Heritage status.

Weaving through vineyards, grain fields, poppy meadows and forest we cycled from chateau to chateau and of course along the banks of the Loire. This network of safe, off road cycle tracks is impressive, we’ll be back…
